WIP and a thought.

Here's a quick view of what I'm working on for the demo. It's starting to strongly seem like a simple interactive story. Sure, there will be a few games, maybe, and there will be animations between the questions... but... well it really is a simple interactive story. Can I get by with that? or do I need to go further?
Photobucket

There's a possibility if I steer just slightly off this road, that I might find a better path. I have an idea, that the story is about 10 animations long on average... but by going negatively it could last for a long time. Or positively it might go even shorter. For example, if the user kept going negatively, soon, the character would be running around the cave in the dark, alone, and afraid. The positive route would lead them to their mother or the source of all the scary stuff. Maybe even the little dragon would defeat the ghost.

There are 3 different basic levels of fear. Unafraid, cautious, and frightened. The fear factor ranges -13 to 13 with -13 being utterly frightened and 13 superman brave. -13 : -5 is frightened, -4 : 4 is cautious, and 5 : 13 is unafraid. In the beginning, the game starts with 0.

Each "pause" will have three plot directions. One will take the player towards frightened, one towards cautious, the other towards brave.

If the player is in "Brave":
Direction A will be -3
Direction B will be -1
Direction C will be +1

If the player is in cautious
Direction A will be -1
Direction B will be +0
Direction C will be +1

If the player is in frightened
Direction A will be -1
Direction B will be +1
Direction C will be +3

Storyline

Start
(0)Story of hero will begin as a book. Zoom in to find Slag walking through the happy forest. It is almost twilight. He meets up with his friends who are poking at a human campfire. They explain that the humans ran off when they saw them. They also begin to start to tell stories. The sky gets darker and the tell one particular scary story. Half way through it  Slag wonders if he should make an excuse to leave.
A: Listen more to the story (-1)
B: stop listening and go home before the sun sets (+1)

A: He continues to listen more to the story and the world around him continues to get darker and darker. Soon his friends disperse from hearing their mother's call. Yet Slag didn't hear his, for he was too far away.
C: Ask a friend to come home with him. (+1)
D: Head back home. (-1)
E: Stay outside and play in the dark. (-2)

C: After a bit of badgering, his best friend, Smaug decides to travel with him to his home. It is getting darker and darker. The sun is barely seen on the horizon. Despite the darkness, Smaug is distracted and talks with his friend. They finally appear at his home. His friend leaves and flies off towards his own cave. Slag moves towards his home, only to find that the fireflies are no longer lighting up the cave entrance. Was no one home? He calls out, but there's no answer.
F: Go outside to catch more fireflies (+2)
G: Venture further into the dark (-2)
H: Stay and call out one more time (-1)

D: Slag returns home, constantly plaged on his way back through twilight that something was following or watching him.Slag moves towards his home, only to find that the fireflies are no longer lighting up the cave entrance. Someone must of let them go!
F: Go outside to catch more fireflies (+2)

Brainstorming once more...

Slag is a young red dragon yerns to prove to his friends that he isn't afraid of anything. They tell him, he must face the Darkness.

"Slag, have you heard of the Darkness?"
He laughs, "You mean the normal darkness that we see when the lights go out?"
"No, no... the true Darkness. It is mischievious but at most of all evil. It prays on drakes with little courage."
"Not quite sure what you're talking about..."
"You should know it though! I heard your dam talking to mine about how you sleep with fireflies at night."
Slag grew silent.

"To master the Darkness, you must confront it

__________________________________

My dam told me that a century ago, when she was a drake, a ruthless human traveled across the mountains with his friends killing all the dragons. They did it for fun! No dragon could stand up to Nakrol the Dragonsbane. There was also something more terribly evil about him, he couldn't be hurt by claws. But eventually he died of old age, thankfully. However, he still roams the mountains... OUR mountains, searching for more dragons to kill. I heard that he likes to loom in the darkness, hides behind rocks or under roosts! Just waiting for an insuspecting dragon or drake to come across his path and then he slices them up! They don't even see it coming!

(Listen more to the story -1) (stop listening +1) (Deny it being true +2 or -2?)

Slag returns home, constantly plaged on his way back through twilight that something was following or watching him.

(Turn around to face it +1) (start to run away -1)

He returns home to an empty den.

(Enters +1) or (stay outside -1)

Three "rooms" are available to enter. The Hoard, the sleeping chambers, ... and brain fart....
Enters the hoard room, trips on something. A few moments later, something crashes and starts to make a scratchy/screechy sound.

(Investigate +1) (Stare at the direction of the sound -1)

What needs to be done

Sure, I should of talked to Natalia before all this and I was wrong to avoid it thinking I knew what I was doing. Now that's over with, it's time to get back into action. But now I need to figure out what I need to do. And not only that, but to have some good stuff to show and demo by the end of this semester.

Maybe instead of the child choosing where it is, I chose it for them, based on increased fright.

The beginnings... change them up a bit. Still keep the Scary movie and storm, but take out the news and add in a friend's tale.

Scary movie will most probably be the least of the three in terms of scariness. Not because of itself but mainly because the others have more reasons to be frightening. Storms are a common fright amongst children and even adults. Storms can also cause things to look not like they normally would in the dark. A friend's tale could be even worse. Children believe wholeheartedly in the things that they are told. It's natural. Most children do not develop disbelief until an earlier age. So to hear a story from another child, could most likely cause the imagination to go wild per say. They would come home and find themselves alert and afraid.

So lets go with an initial three stages of fright level.

As far as the "middle" part of the story. Initially it might start off with under the bed or closet.... or maybe just sounds. Second level would be feeling more of the presence. Seeing shapes made out of the lightning from the storm. Then the last one would include the bed, the closet, and mirrors.

In the end, the change would be the gradual ... fix... to the problem. The parent could denounce the story. They could frighten away the "monsters". Defeat the monster itself.

Either way, I'm going to stay with a "room" as the main scene while changing the character to a dragon possibly. The question is, how do I keep the Imaginary Friend stuff in all of this? I'm sure it'll be simple at some point.

Deep Actionscripting?? LOL no

So I was stupid. I bought this book only to realize (after I kept falling asleep reading) that this wasn't going to help me. In fact, why did I have to know so much actionscripting in the first place?

Here are the "actions" that will need to take place

Stop
Play
Next Scene
Buttons
Randomization

That's it. That's all I can think of and everything is solved within that. All I truely need to know is if I should go stills or pure video. Possibly it will be stills.

So there goes my money.

Now that I've settled that, what's the next action?
Well... what do I need to do?

Model basic characters
develop storyline
Decide if continuing current direction
Prove methods
Should I include the increasing fright factor?

I need to talk to Natalia but I'll talk to her next Tuesday. Since that is the case, what now?

Learn to animate in Maya or Max would be good probably. I don't want to take an animation class not from a teacher I trust is adequate.

The Pit Hole

There's always those times where a giant pit hole in the road of your project goal will show up. Sometimes, if you're going fast enough (with confidence) you'll take it and just breeze right over it. Sometimes you might even see it before you get to it so you'll slow down not to hurt yourself. Yet even then sometimes you might even get stuck in such a pit hole that you can't see your way out even though in the end you realized it was simply as forcing yourself out of it.

This is what happened to me yesterday. I hit a block. A point in time where I start to worry if what I'm doing is really what I want to do. Or of I'm doing it correctly or it will comply with restrictions set in stone in some place at some time.

Yesterday, I talked with Natalia, our present psychology guru. She brought up many points that encourged me and developed more ideas but yet when I walked away, I felt like I lost something. Sleeping on it, I realized that my project can still work, and that I will find a way to work this out. Natalia had enough faith in me that she wanted to meet every week to discuss my project.

A few things that will initially be addressed is if I want to stay with realism or venture into a more imaginative spectrum. Natalia believes that replacing the main character with a creature will allow the child to associate more with the story instead of another child. I agree with her mostly, yet also without a certain realism, how can I truly get my point across. I can't have this project be all smiles and rainbows, that isn't what it is addressing. This project is addressing the feeling of fear, dread, or alarm that one might get when they see something in the corner of their eye in the darkness. The feeling when you're watching a scary movie that you just want to turn off but you can not because you don't want to leave the safety of the sofa or bed.

This project needs to gradually get darker and darker. The creature needs to become scarier and scarier each time the child plays it. That is my thinking. It is supplying the child gently to their fears. Not throwing them in there and hope they survive. It would break instead of build them.

A note I'd like to keep...

"You" is referring to my teacher.

So pretty much I don't think this project is even possible or innovative. Let me recap with my post on the Faculty Meetings section.

---------------
The difference between my meeting with you and my meeting with Natalia are drastic. At least with the end feeling.
With our review and discussion of what I had I done and what I was doing gave me confidence that I was going in the right direction.

Now I don't think I can even do this project or that this project will be innovative at least.

My conversation with Natalia is summarized with this.
*Instead of the child helping another child, have them help a creature or animal. Children feel more connected with friendly animals than with other children. (Interesting...)
*Develop a heartwarming story with adventure.
*Fear of darkness is hard to address with a game because of the light that the screen gives off does not set the child in the right environment.
*Fears/Phobias are cured by constant repetition towards the source of the phobia.
*Make even more choices in the story available to the child.
*I have not researched as much as I thought I have.
*This doesn't seem very innovating because it has probably been done. Just like the (?)th Grade adventures game I used to play as a kid.

Did some research and there is one article zooming around since 2003 that video games might help phobias. These don't address fear of the dark, but they say that fears of spiders and heights can be solved this way. However, I'm afraid of 'moving' heights or the such and I've flown over stuff in World of Warcraft, I've literally fallen to my death in these games on purpose just to see how long it'd take. Yet never was I afraid of heights as I would of if I stood on the edge of a cliff or jumped off a flying creature/plane. Video games can't fix phobias.

So in conclusion and excuse my language... I think I'm fucked. Natalia opened my eyes.
----------------------------------------------

Now it comes back down to, should I continue? Pretend it will work to appease the SIP Gods who appraise us. Which by the way, who accepts our ideas or not in the end. Could someone figuratively do an entire project only in the end be turned down because the deans or whoever it is decided that it wasn't innovative while the teacher and friends thought it was.

To me, logically, this project, while slightly innovative, will not work. Children won't get over their fears of the dark through a video game as much as they would being directly exposed to it. I could address other fears but each can be solved the same way or is best solved that way.

Going back to my previous project is silly as well. It's innovative, sure, but heavy heavy programming. I'd have to find someone... maybe....

I could look back at my past ideas but most weren't as innovative.

I really do NOT want to work on a SIP that has zero animation. Yet I can not think of a new project idea because, I'm not an idea generator, I'm an idea enhancer. I build well off of other peoples ideas.

A little help from my Mom and Judy

So I've changed the very very beginning just a bit.

When the child starts up IFIT, they will first be asked two questions: "Are you a boy or girl?" and "Who puts you to sleep at night?"

The boy/girl question will lead to the game child being the same gender. While the 2nd question will determine who puts the game child to sleep and interacts with them throughout IFIT. Also this effects the very end of the interactive animation. Mothers will either tell a story or sing the child to sleep. Father will turn on the TV or tell a story.

We also thought about adding a how to make a dreamcatcher thing.

New Idea

A growl will sound in the room. The child user will pick the place they think the monster is.
Most likely the child user will pick a place where their own monster comes from. There are zero indicators where the monster "actually" is since all areas are clickable.

Beginnings will be randomized.
  • Scary movie
  • Argument from parents
  • News on TV
Places where monster can be.
  • Under the bed -> close up the bed
  • In the closet -> Dress up the monster in silly outfits, dress up game
  • Corners of ceiling -> eat a comforting snack in the kitchen, teach kids how to make healthy snacks
  • Outside the room ->denounce that a monster could get inside, show locks
  • Made out of objects in the room -> Monster Spray, spray all monsters inside
Each place where the monster can be will start a response video/animation that may or may not be interactive. Also the response might not directly co-ordinate with where the monster is (at this moment in the planning stage.)

All will end with a song, story, or a happy tv show put on by the mother. (they will all correspond with the situation)

Animation note: Parental figures faces are not shown.

Beginning of IFIT

Blog as an easier to read document.

•Imaginary Friend Instructor (IFI) greets the user and begins to explain the situation. Child can not see the IFIT (Imaginary Friend in Training), but can see the IFI because the IFI is the child’s original Imaginary Friend. Children can see only their own imaginary friends.
o Would you like to help a girl or boy?
* Girl= Tabby. Green eyes, black hair, blue pjs, stuffed animal. Animals are predominately around her room. Green is the main color.
* Boy=Tobby. Brown eyes, blonde hair, white shirt and pants, toy cars and planes. Mechas are predominately around his room. Red is the main color.

•IFI takes the IFIT to see their chosen child and tells them a little about their life and problems. They then go through the portal into the real world where the chosen child is watching a movie.

•The child is watching a scary movie with screams and very mild violence. The user can not see the screen but can see the facial expressions.
oShould they be watching this movie so late at night?
*Yes = Hmm, are you sure? Scary movies are ok for adults cause they are older and know better. But kids haven’t learned nessicary skills like karate to defend themselves from the bad guys!
*No = That’s right! Scary movies can put scary thoughts in a kid’s head. Lets hurry and help ___ before they get too scared.
*I don’t know = Well that’s why I’m here. What we got to do is stop ___ from watching this movie. I’m pretty sure if they keep watching the movie, they’ll get more and more scared! And you know what happens when people get scared, they think of all sorts of other scary things.

•The duo stop the child from watching the movie but to no avail, the child has gotten scared and is looking around nervously. Mom comes it to tuck him in and doesn’t see that he’s scared. She turns off the light and ___ is still a bit scared. Suddenly there is a growl somewhere in the room.
oDid you hear that? We can hear what ___ can hear. Also see what he can see! Do you see anything in the room?
*After a while clickable red eyes show up underneath the bed. There’s a monster under the bed! Get back get back! Monsters will eat us easily!

•After hearing the growls ___ calls back their mom who tries to sooth him down. She tells him that monsters can’t fit under the bed. They are just too big.
oBut we saw the monster! Maybe it wasn’t real. Is ___’s mom right?
*Yes= I guess you’re right, but it sure seemed real! Well what should we do to make sure?
•Stuff the bed with toy boxes.
•Lower the bed to the ground.
•Board up the bottom.
*No= But mommies are always right! They know even more than us imaginary friends do. What if we did something to keep the monster from staying underneath the bed?
•Stuff the bed with toy boxes.
•Lower the bed to the ground.
•Board up the bottom.

Developing Methods

The Monster

Do you know what the monster looks like?
*Yes *No
Does it look like an animal, a human, or something else?
*Animal *Human *Other
What kind of body shape does it have?
*Insect *Reptile *Bird *Cat *Dog *Sea Creature
How many arms and legs does it have?
*None *2 *4 *6 *8 *Too many!
Does it have eyes? What kind?
*None *Glowing *Colored
Does it have special powers?
*No *Blending *Elemental *Teleportation
Can it speak a language?
*No *English *Unknown

Rewards- child can input rewards and guess points for them and a sheet can be automatically generated (Game version would allow this to be printed)

If the monster looks like something familiar to the child's normal life, this might pertain to a different fear. For example if the child is afraid of a wolf monster outside their window, they might be afraid of the neighbor's dog. If the ooze monster that dwells underneath their bed frightens them, they might very well be afraid of water. Ask them about it. If some of these are true, delve more and follow the basic steps. Expose, Explore, Envision.

IFIT boiled down

*"Hey so you're th enew trainee eh? Well today's your big day. No more practice! This is the real thing.
*Hey we're shor ton imaginary friends back home. Think you can help out

or go an entirely different route...

Maybe a teaching animation/game for adults? Bring their inner child back in order to interact with their child as an equal.

Environment
-Find potentially scary things around the house or outside: shadows, noises, creaks

Monster
-Perhaps the monster is an enlarged fear of your child's current worry. Switch the situation around. Make the monster silly or maybe tell a story of the monster afraid of the boy above his head.
-Denounce false beliefs.
-Obtain description of monster through use of a drawing, song, or other.
-Monsters are very real to your child. While you might think their version looks a bit like Monster's Inc. in reality their imagined creation might even scare you too.

Removing the Monster
- Use "Monster Spray" or suck them up with a vacuum. If that doesn't work, call in a friend that your child doesn't recognize and call them the "Monster Busters"
- Invest in a bed that has no underneath side. Fill the underneath side with boxes of toys. Encourage them to bring out the toys revealing to them there's nothing under there
- Careful what you say 3 hours before bed time. Arguments or passionate conversations can send a child's mind any direction.

Your Child
-Don't overreact; Sleeping with your child can cause them to lose bravery thus always running to you for safety.
-Respect their feelings; be on their level. Believe them. Don’t ridicule.
-Bring them into a comfort zone.  Kitchen is a great place. Everyone loves food.
-Once the extermination has been completed, comfort your child.
-Give the child control over the situation.

Title and Research

New title: Imaginary Friend in Training (IFIT)

    * Play detective. If your kid can't tell you what's scaring him, look for clues. Jennifer Bosavage, of Huntington, New York, couldn't figure out why her 2-year-old son sometimes panicked when he got dressed -- until she noticed that it happened only when he wore shirts that button. "He couldn't undo buttons yet, so I think he felt trapped in his shirts," she says.
    * Be creative. Experiment with ways to help your child feel safer. For toddlers, the more visual the strategy, the better. If he's afraid of being sucked down the bathtub drain, cover it with a washcloth or an upside-down cup, says Dr. Hagar.
    * Change your child's perception. If he screams at the sight of bugs, read him books about friendly ones or draw pictures of them. When he stops fearing the idea of bugs, he may feel more brave around real ones, says Stephen W. Garber, PhD, coauthor of Monsters Under the Bed.
    * Clear up false beliefs. Sure, you know that a haircut is no big deal. But that's because you understand that hair doesn't bleed and the stylist won't snip your ears. The more your toddler knows, the less he'll worry.
    * Answer the "what-ifs." Children this age are mostly worried about what could happen, says Dr. Garber. If your child jumps at the sight of your neighbor's dog, for example, calm her by explaining the dog's behavior. Instead of saying, "The dog won't hurt you," be specific: "The dog sniffs you to get to know you. He barks because that's how dogs talk."
    * Don't overreact to nightmares. When Ryan McCaffery, 5, has a bad dream, mom Candace does her best to calm her. "Sometimes I'm just so exhausted that I let her stay with me, though," admits the Atlanta mom. But it's better to give a quick reassurance and tuck your child into her own bed; otherwise, you validate her fears.
    * Look for role models. If your child is terrified of the monkey bars at the playground, encourage her to watch an older sibling or another kid around her age play on them without pressuring her to take a turn. Seeing somebody she can relate to confronting her fear may give her a shot of courage.
    * Respect her feelings. Teasing your child or forcing her to confront a situation that terrifies her will probably backfire. But don't overindulge the fear either -- otherwise, you may convince her that she's truly in danger, says Dr. Burgess. If your child freaks out every time she hears thunder, for example, resist the urge to scoop her up and hold her tight. Get down on her level and talk about it instead.

teps

   1. 1

Comfort your child with encouraging words.

   2.

Obtain a general description of the monster. Ask your child why he/she thinks there is a monster in the room. What is the monster doing? What does this monster look like? Is it a boy monster or a girl monster? This will help ease the fear as your child is describing it as a story.

   3. 3

Believe what your child tells you. Of course, there's no monster in the room, but its presence is very real to your child.

   4. 4

Take your child out of the room with you; into the kitchen is probably best. The kitchen is the most comforting room in your home.(Taking your child into bed with you is not a good solution. This can get to be a habit hard to break.)

   5. 5

Prepare a small snack for your child (such as an orange or banana). Instruct your child to enjoy the snack while you go into the bedroom and eliminate the "monster". (See "Warnings".)

   6. 6

Take down the "Monster Spray" and explain that your mother/father always kept a bottle or can of "Monster Spray" in the house when you were little and had monsters in your room, too. Let your child know that "Monster Spray" always works. (See "Things you will need"). An alternative might also be to use a vacuum cleaner to "suck up" all the monsters. Then dispose of the bag in the trash so the monsters are gone for good.

   7. 7

Go into the "scary place" and squirt "Monster Spray" under the bed, in the floor area of the closet, and around the windows. The room will have a fresh, comforting fragrance. (And monsters hate it!)

   8. 8

Bring your child back into the room where you can perform a final inspection together. Check all areas where monsters had been hiding.

   9. 9

Encourage your child back into bed and remain with him/her for a few minutes. Maybe tell a quick story or sing the child's favorite song. If necessary, briefly lie down with your child until he/she is secure that all monsters, alligators and other scary things have vanished. (Or until he/she nods off to sleep.)

  10. 10

If you are a busy Mom/Dad with other children or are unable to do the story, song, etc. Try putting on your child's favorite cartoon movie (as long as it's not a scary one, and it's age appropriate.) A happy cartoon will give them happy thoughts,(thus erasing the scary ones) helping them to relax and fall asleep. let them watch till they fall asleep.

  11. 11

If all else fails then you can simply invest in a bed which doesn't have any space underneath, or cut the legs off the current bed. This essentially nips the problem in the bud.
"If parents are not afraid, the child doesn't have to be afraid,"

Dr. Cohen also advises letting the child talk, sing or even draw a picture about it. Ask the child how he can make the monster friendlier. Maybe he's a scary, green color, and the toddler can make him pink or even give him a silly name. "The child sees that he has some control over the situation," says Dr. Cohen. For Flora, letting her daughters draw a picture helps her to better understand exactly what it is that they're afraid of, especially when they're having difficulty articulating it. Sometimes it turns out to be as simple as a shadow.

Children can turn the most innocuous event into night-time terrors. Be careful what is said around your child. Mum and dad might be quietly discussing a family death, an angry incident at work or something awful on the news. If the child is in earshot, a lot of the conversation will pass over their heads but it only takes for one unfortunate image to filter through and the creepy in the cupboard is back. Keep your conversation innocent until after bedtime, if possible.

Another excellent creator of monsters is shadow. We like to keep a child’s bedroom decoration bright and colorful but this often means curtains are flimsy, easily blown in the breeze or fabulous at letting external light enter and create strange shadows.
Try putting a blackout lining on the rear of the curtains to cut down shadows. If there is a tree close to the house (and yours to prune at will), cut off any branches that might scrape the window or make scary shapes on the wall. Anything that helps reduce the chance of odd shadows will help.
Give them a flashlight that is easily operated by small hands, and show them how turning the flashlight beam on a shadow makes it ‘run away’. Giving the child power over the darkness is a big step to banishing night monsters.

Teaching
a child how to make shadow shapes with their hands is a great trick. Aside from them having control over the shapes that appear, it also shows that shadows are created by objects that we control, and not by the banshee behind the bookcase.

If your child has a big dark space under the bed, buy some clear, lidded boxes, fill them with toys, books, even stored clothes and place them under the bed. With no room under there, monsters can’t get in. Your child will get used to dragging boxes out from under the bed to access the contents and fears can be allayed because they know exactly what’s under there.

Fix child-locks or bolts to the top of doors on cupboards and closets to stop them coming open accidently and scaring the child.

A final tip – Should your house become infested with monsters and you are at your wits end, call in the Monster Mashers! This requires a good friend that the child doesn’t know (or a family member, extremely well disguised) and some mysterious bottles of liquid accompanied by a banishing wand (anything wand-like and mysterious).

"Halloween allows children to safely address their fears-and can even make them seem fun," notes Dr. Garber.

"Every night at bedtime, he'd say to me, 'Mom, what about the monsters?' And I'd ceremoniously usher them out of his room, down the stairs and out the front door."

To avoid reinforcing her son's fears, Smith never admitted to seeing the monsters. "I'd ask him, 'Are they at the door now?' 'Yes.' 'What are they doing now?' 'They're going down the stairs.'" She would finish by telling the monsters in no uncertain terms to get out, closing the door firmly behind them. "I was very strict with these monsters of his," she explains. "The very last time we kicked them out, we said, 'And don't you ever come back here again!' and they didn't."

New Idea!?!?!

Interactive animation that helps children overcome their fears of the "monster under the bed".
http://www.animationtherapy.co.uk/media/1489/dare-to-dream.pdf

Multiple endings. (each needs an effect on the child)
  • Defeat the monster
  • befriend the monster
  • Protector
Add music into the therapy -contacting mom

--My basic thoughts of the plot would be a child who is constantly plagued by the "monster" under his bed. In the beginning of the story, he is playing around his mom, and she angrily asks him to go to his room to play. He tries to plead her sympathy over the monster under the bed but she tells him the same old response "There's nothing under the bed". He goes to his room and constantly looks over to his bed, seeing two eyes look back at him. To distract himself he watches a movie. In the movie, a knight fights against a dragon hiding in a cave. Inspired by the knight in the movie, the child gathers items in his room that resemble a sword, shield, and helm and he bravely goes forth towards the monster under his bed.
At this point there are three endings that I've thought of: (1)He simply finds out it was his teddy bear, (2)he enters the space under his bed and escapes into a world of fantasy, or (3)an actual "monster" comes out from under the bed and he fights and defeats it only to wake up from falling asleep during the movie. He looks over to the bed again, and find that the eyes are gone.

    Animated Story

The screen will be black and will blurr into the world.
"Hey, are you ok?" came a voice from no particular direction. Vaguely you feel the comforting feeling of soft grass between your fingers. Opening you eyes, the darkness around your consciousness evaporates. You are within a wide open field full of flowers. Out in the distance rolls many hills then finally towering mountains. To you right, a widely used dirt road stretches north and south.
Essentially this will not be exactly what will happen because the user is allowed to look around on their own accord. However these things will be available to see.
Looking up, you see no sun but the clouds themselves seem to brighten up the world. There in front of you is a scraggily traveler. A giant pack sits upon his back stocked with various camping equipment. However, most notable is the many books that hang from the sides of the pack. His outward hand is blackened at the fingers from the bleeding of ink. A writer no doubt.
A small indication like a bubble or other image that intices the user to click will cause the character to reach out and grab the man's hand. There are several of these kinds of things that will happen in the game. The user also has the choice to refuse the man's hand.
Trustingly, you take his hand and he pulls you up. He look expectantly at you, as if he's waiting for you to speak.
Again, the words said by the user are completely up to them. The following is an example of what might happen.
    "Where am I?" you ask.
What every the user types, the NPC will respond. If they are friendly enough, they'll say more than three word sentences.
The man laughs at you but gives a friendly smile. "You're in Thaer, but more importantly, you are 10 miles out of Raddoun."

    "Raddoun? What's that?"

"It's a small town to the south." He geustures in the general direction. "Though I don't suggest going there at the moment."

    "Why?"

"There seems to be something wrong with the villagers. Sure they answer your questions and sell you wares... but all they seem to be concerned about is the forest," the traveler tilts his head to the large forest that lays beyond.
You silently consider checking out the village or visiting the forest. In that time, you finally decide to visit the forest. Quite, possibly there is something interesting there. "Thank you," you tell the traveler and begin heading towards the forest.
Here's another option. The user could go two ways to investigate or simply ignore it. Thanking, forgiving, and giving gifts will also increase your reputation in game.
Vaguely you remember that this forest is Tel'murin Forest, but despite that, you move on. The light from the clouds brightens up the forest to a glowing green hue. It is alive with sound. There is nothing that seems odd at all. The animals aren't running from anything evil. Seems like whatever is bothering the villages might be harmless. Yet, as you break into a large clearing, you are encountered by a sleeping dragon. Warily, you step back. However, its nose twitches and its large eyes open to reveal golden irises. The black pupils shrink into thin vertical lines that focus on you. For a moment, you feel that you should run away and that I might attack you, but oddly, the dragon smiles at you. It lifts its head off its great paws and shifts its head to look straight at you.
Dragons are the hallmark of the game. All interactions with any NPC are completely freeform as they talk to you. You are also given reactions to use at anytime, like cower, nod, etc. and each of these reactions will affect the NPCs.

"I was wondering what was taking you so long," the dragon grummbled, its voice rumbling the very earth underneath your feet.

"What?!" you asked a little hurriedly.

"I summoned you here only a few days ago, it seems the energy couldn't quite find you on Earth."

Totally confused, you stand there a little stunned and say nothing.

"Welcome to Thaer, I have summoned you for one thing. "
One other great aspect is that the NPCs will be animated. They will  move their arms, explain their situation with gestures and even some, like dragons, might circle you if they are trying to threaten you.

    Second Screen

This will contain any tweeks to a person's appearance. The final product will allow the user to manipulate their avatars, like Sims, to an utmost perfect reflection of themselves. Parts of their body that need to be fatter or wider will use the scroll on the mouse. However, some attributes like muscle, hair length (which will grow), fat, etc. will use sliders. In particular, hair will not be set styles but instead the user can use the slider to "grow" and "cut" their hair to the desired length.
Color is also something that will not be available via scroll.
Voice will be an option to scroll up and down the pitch of grunts, attacks, etc.

    Mini Doppelganger

    First Screen
User input of themselves. Bloodtype, birthdate, gender, height, eye color...

Bloodtype will most likely affect the Spirit(mana) pool. One end will be a larger pool but slow regen. The other end will be a smaller pool but fast regen.

Age can effect the classes available to the user.Younger users will not be allowed to be blacksmiths or gunsmen. However the classes that are available will be page, apprentice, etc.

Gender isn't too much of a game changer, but males will tend to be more adapt to physical while females are more mental(magic).

Height merly sets the model in the second screen.

Eye color may or may not have a great impact. Those with green will be considered more in tune with dragons. There will also be a choice for those who have eyes that change color.

    Animation Explanation

Describe the game in an animation.
Develop a very basic version of the game. Character creation, one NPC.
The only problem with the very basic is that you still need the character creation depth, can't really shrink it down. Maybe to basicnfo.

    Dragon Biology Update

While driving back from Arizona, I had plenty of time to think over the game. Though mostly it was over the dragon aspect of it.

One of the endings is that you help the dragons "reconnect" to Earth. Dragons were magically advanced far back in time before the meteor struck Earth. The truth is that the meteor that was supposed to hit Earth, was far greater than what scientists believe.  In fact, what hit Earth was a chunk that could not be avoided by the dragons. What had happened was, before the impact, the greatest of the dragons altered reality and created an identical Earth. This was because they feared that they were influencing the natural habitat of Earth far too much and it was suffering because of that. When the meteor started to head towards Earth, the dragons, unable to destroy such a large quantity of space rock, transported it into their new world of Thaer in which it cracked the planet into several pieces on its northern hemisphere.

Slowly over time, their creation, Thaer, continuously sucked up the magic in the world of Earth in order to fully complete its physical form in the alternate dimension. This lead to the slow disappearance of dragons and drakes on Earth and why we do not see them on our planet any longer. This "reconnection" has been in the process for hundreds of years as the dragons have waited for a sentient species to develop on Earth before starting the connection process. You will help align the supreme vortexes of power with those of Earth's Guardian who is doing the same on your home world.

    The Purpose

The purpose that drives the character forward will ultimately be a decision of the player. There will be multiple instances where the player has to pick and choose. Such as an NPC who has learned of your ideal, asks if you are trying to go back home or stay here. Most that have gone through / are on the same path as you will suggest you stay. Though there are the occasional game addicts that will talk to you in DnD language and will express a desire to return home to play video games. Though those are considered crazy. Who would want to leave a world so much like the games they play?

A Breif History of Dragons in Thaer

Dragons will be a constant reminder in the background of the story... of course unless you are a Shapeshifter. Those of the highest order of the shapeshifters are all dragons.

In front of the story, you see dragons as a rarity, the normal kind, there are those that are wise and those that are blinded by animal instinct. Dragons naturally horde gold and jewels in order to strengthen their scales. If you are defending a wagon full of gold or just happen to carry a good large satchel of it, chances are, you'll find a dragon nearby.

In the back of the story, Dragons are indeed the dominant species in every shape and form. They are the most technilogically advanced and phyisically they don't need much else than their claws to destroy you. Of course, they have much more than that. You see. In order for the universe to be balanced (and not overrun with dragons), as the dragons evolved, their younger selves grew more instinctual. 1 out of 10 eggs laid in a clutch would wield a "dragon", while the rest are denounced as "drakes".  For the first few hundred years, most dragons and drakes are hardly told apart. It is when the dragon begins to understand its true powers over nature, and its curiousity grows, that it soon seeks out more like it. These dragons will travel all across Thaer for knowledge. It might take centuries for a dragon to stumble upon the capital city, others, it might only take a few days.

The Capital is where most dragons live. It is also the only space port on the planet in which the dragons can travel to other solar systems. Yes, I said other solar systems. You see, dragons have become so technologically and magically advanced that they have crowned themselves with the duty to oversee the universe. They are what humans have called guardian angels, spirit guides, muses, etc. By using their shapshifting powers, (which is ultimately their power to control energy and matter) they form themselves to their liking.

    Story

How should the game begin? Should you be waking up? Waking up to start a new day? Waking up from sleeping during class? [One choice in creation could be your average sleep schedule and what they 'wake' up from can be such. Another factor is if they work or not and if it is during the day or night.]
Someone would be waking you up. [This person would be the one who is most important to you, but you don't see their face as they soon leave.] And you'd find yourself in somewhat familiar surroundings. [Current residence would be added as a configuration. The place closest to where you live now will be a choice. This could include about 10-20 different game sets alone, not to mention the particulars that happen to you in game. Doppelganger WILL be a recreation and will require lots of advanced ways to minimalize the data that will be required to house such a database in which most of it might not even be used. ] All in all, this beginning area will be what introduces you to the game mechanics. You can lift objects, throw them, and break them. You will be taught the Text communication with the NPC and the wonders that can foretold with that mechanism. Basic fighting might be introduced here but that can ultimately depened on what your personality turned out to be in the game.

The greatest obstacle will be WHY and HOW are you transported into Thaer or Ohm... Probably Thaer since it'll be more easy to explain...Will those with higher intellect already be studying into alternate dimensions?

    Doppelganger's User Recognition

Changing the voice/language recognition to more of a typing recognition. You type your reply and based on the words or phrases in the sentence you said, the NPC will respond accordingly. You can also ask a bunch about them depending on how well they trust you. Things like their favorite foods, hobbies, or some good rumors might help. Also, NPCs that trust you can be asked how to do things like fight, etc. just in case you forgot.

"Have you heard any rumors lately?"
"I'm bored and I need something to do."
    "How do I cast spells?"

If the NPC does not recognize what you are trying to say they will respond with something along the lines of "What did you say?". Kinda like Blizzard, if they don't understand you repeatedly, they'll start to get angrier and angrier until they'll just ignore you and won't talk to you. Everyone knows someone is going to try and say "Fuck you" or something along those lines if this is implemented. So if this happens, the NPC will respond and stop talking to them (if they are good, evil might respond differently).

    "Hello"
    "Sorry, I didn't hear that."
    "What did you say again?"
"I don't think I get what you are trying to tell me."
"Why are you speaking so strangely?"
"Are you making fun of me?"
    "I'm sorry, I don't speak stupid."
"That's what your mother said last night."
    "Stop bothering me."
"Why don't you go and be retarded elsewhere."

Typing instead of selection will ultimately keep this game on the PC. Possible versions where selections are available will be on the systems. These selections might be decided by a scrollable bar that is green to yellow to red which represents a good, in-between, or negative response.

    Doppelganger

During work, I decided to share my game idea with one of my friends, hoping that they would listen and wait til I was done before judging. Our conversation really helped me somewhat flesh out my idea.

In Doppelganger, the first thing you'll see is the character creation screen in which you'll be creating your virtual self who will be at most like you. All this information that you input into the game will translate and effect the incoming world that you will be "visiting". Once done with the creation process, the game starts with you waking up at home normally. This stage is to get the user used to the controls. Things like picking up objects and affecting the world around you will be covered in this stage. Then something strange happens (depending on the tendencies in your profile) and you are whisked away into the world of Ohm. There will be two or three main branches in which will affect your gameplay. Your goal. Either you are trying to return to Earth or you don't care and wish to remain in this world forever because it was one of your own personal fantasies. No matter the reason, you are on Ohm and soon encounter the townsfolk of the local village. Weirded out by your strange attire, they ask many questions.

Skipping a bit, eventually you will learn the fact that you can learn a class. Here's where Heidi and I really talked.

In the beginning, you entered your bloodtype. This piece of information is important because the type of blood type you have affects the amount of Intuition and Logic you possess. These are effectively mana pools but work differently for different classes. Such as the Shapeshifter class would need a huge pool of Intuition to be ultimately effective.

Another thing I was thinking about adding to the game is voice/language recognition. Meaning that the NPCs will actually understand what you say to them through the microphone provided.

Also, Doppelganger has the ability to be multi-player through system or LAN so that you may explore the world around you with your friends.

Looking Back 3.2 & SIP Decision

    Jnana
    • Why would someone want this?
People who like to stay in touch with the world. Random news and information will increase the users' knowledge.
    • How is your major involved?
Animations for the different information that goes out to people. Will be a huge project to include all cities, countries, and people can upload some about themselves.
    • What other majors would be involved?
      Programming.
    • What more did you develop as you were asked the questions?Users can choose to make their own card to be displayed to random people. There might be future issues with stalkers. However user input will be limited in order to keep them safe. A/S/L(though only to city) + Name + favorites
     ----------------------------------------------
Here is a list of some good ideas that I might like to go through with:
    Doppelganger
    Jnana
    Virtual Plant
    Language Buddy

Of all of these, Doppelganger seems to be the best of them though they all have their own nice quirks. Jnana might be a good back up. Language Buddy seems a bit difficult and relies heavily on robotics and programming. Virtual Plant seems like a good idea, but interest in it would be very low. It's not really needed.

So in the end, I think I'll go with Doppelganger and call it rightly so :D Only problem is, it might not be too "innovative". We'll see.

    Looking Backwards Version 3.0

    Doppelganger
    • Why would someone want this?
There's always that fantasy that everyone has of putting themselves in their character's shoes. Or even just tagging along with the character.
    • How is your major involved?
Animations for the characters in the game. Design for the game.
    • What other majors would be involved?
Game Design, Game Programming, Game Art & Animation (maybe).
    • What more did you develop as you were asked the questions?
All things about yourself are implemented into the game. Age, sex, gender, birthplace, sign, bloodtype, everything. If you've won awards, if you've gone to the hospital... everything. Even a personality test to give your character the emotion it needs.

    Looking Backwards ... Still...

    Virtual Friend
    • Why would someone want this?
People who like cute things? Maybe someone who can't type? Instead the dragon can type for you.
    • How is your major involved?
I will be animating and modeling the creature or dragon that runs around the screen. I'll also model the more detailed model that is printed and can be interacted with.
    • What other majors would be involved?
Programming for the software, and possibly robotics for the sense touching on the little dragon.
    • What more did you develop as you were asked the questions? The screen buddy can type for you. It's like Dragon with an actual dragon! or other creature. So it has voice and touch recognition. Also it will have its own personality and continueally develop it depending on what you do daily. So if you are a gamer it it might whip out game items and play with them. Or of you check your mail a lot, it will notify you if you have mail. The dragon/creature does not speak English unless the creature is a human. Elves would be made to speak in Queyan when it needs to. etc. etc.

    Looking Backwards

    Virtual Plant
    • Why would someone want this?
People who do not have the time to water plants. Also gives a house a unique floral display because the plants will be different or alien to what we see normally.
    • How is your major involved?
Animation is within the software. Plants will grow according the parameters set. Models and texture of the software plant. Ending print will be "re-modeled" to be as realistic as possible when printed.
    • What other majors would be involved?
Programmers for the software. Other artists and robotics...? Robotics majors can work on installing the electrical components of the pot and developing a way for the plant itself to change color if possible.
    • What more did you develop as you were asked the questions?
The printed plant may be able to change color depending on how much "water" it has not or has been given. There would be a little health point monitor on the bottom of the pot to show how alive it is. You press a button to water it everyday. But you can also set the plant to not 'need' to be watered. The printed plant would be in normal soil and a real porcelain pot for ultimate realistic quality.

    Creature
    • Why would someone want this?Probably aimed towards children. They are able to create their own toy creatures and experience as their creations are given habits and sounds.
    • How is your major involved?Probably the animation part of the game or the software in which the child can view a model of their creature on the computer with it making sounds.
    • What other majors would be involved?Game design, game art and animation, game programming will work on the game aspect. Robotics will develop a way to put the chip inside the piece for the computer to read.
    • What more did you develop as you were asked the questions? There will be a game element in which the developed creature can fight its way through an online world. Kids can fight each other or NPCs.

    Language Buddy
    • Why would someone want this?Multilingual families can be rest assured that their child will learn the languages they need to live in their parent's world. Learning languages is best started when the child is young, because their learning capabilities are so strong at that age. Even if a child doesn't belong to a multi-lingual family, the parents can start them off learning another language and the child will easily breeze by school or college classes. Also this might develop into versions for adults or teenagers.
    • How is your major involved? My major is not very involved into this aspect. Models can be created in modeling software before they are made and designed into the physical world.
    • What other majors would be involved? This will be BIG on programming and for robotics. Language software will need to be created for the Language Buddy and components put into its body.
    • What more did you develop as you were asked the questions?
Adults and teenagers won't be subjected to  carrying around a plushie (if they don't want to). As progress is shown, later versions for teenagers and adults will be made. These will and can carry advanced or early language programs. Models might be robotic pets or a simple hand held that you take a picture of the item you are looking at. Could be a hat, or a pet that can sit on your shoulder.

    New and Old Ideas

    Empathsize
I am animation. I am the creator of life. I am a tool in which life is created. AR animation software? Animate with your hands. Sculpt with your hands. Who am I? A dragon with the powers of space manipulation...

    Weather or Not
Sky box weather generator? Depending on the amount of industrial or organic things on the map, the sky's weather will adjust accordingly. Also input real world coordinates. Have a bar on the side that tells you how much rain, snow, sleet, hail, tornados, etc. will appear on the map and the skybox. Will need to research into how plants and world elements effect the weather. Do some tests. Title: Weather or Not.? LOL. Definitely need a programmer. It would be an addon to a game engine maybe? or ...some world editor. Input models for trees and all sorts of other plants. Each model requires what type of plant or object it is. Insert all your own models.
    --------------------------
    Evolve 2.0
A morning widget displaying a random country or county or city or town or person... letting you know who they are, what they are, how they are like, what they like, what they dislike.. A way to evolve global awareness of fellow Earthians.
How to impose this onto an animation major. Maybe animations of the people? Cartoonist-ic ones? the nationalities, flags, water, ships... Just to add some flavor. Title -> Known or Arimasu which is existence... or a cute name, like Chi which happens to mean wisdom, higher knowledge. Jnana  is the same but a Buddhist term.

    +3

    Transformation

Animation to nature. Steampunk in terms of animation? What if the world was controlled by the power of magic/energy instead of mainly technological advances through electric devices. What would the world be like? Does innovation have to be along the lines of technology? What about a story element never seen before? What about... something where you input who you are, what you have done, into a game, and the way that the NPCs react to you, have something to do with that? Might even be a mind thing...convincing people to make things out of themselves.

Animators constantly separate themselves from the workplace to observe the world around them. How the world animates itself. Their job is to simply copy and hopefully represent the same item that you would find in the real world.

    Reverse
The opposite of animation. To create something living and breathing. Maybe work backwards? Bring dead things to life? Dead people or animals. Animated bones. Zombies... If animators actually were necromancers? Or are they already? Though the things that modelers create were never alive before hand. Happy Birthday. Deathday. Animators kill their own creations... and reanimate it into something else. Zombimation.

    Animation
Ha, a method the same as the topic. Bring to life the computer? Think outside the box. AR sculpting. What if all living things became inanimate and inanimate became animate? Repetition... repeating the same movement... That's already Motion Capture. Tell a creature on the computer to do the things you want on your computer?

    Saturday, February 27, 2010

    Hyperbole

A touch of your mouse, it explodes with plant life. Reminded of the Forest spirit from Mononoke.  Talking animals. Animation...

The act, process, or result of imparting life, interest, spirit, motion, or activity.
The quality or condition of being alive, active, spirited, or vigorous.
    The state of being alive.

    How can one exaggerate life?

the condition that distinguishes organisms from inorganic objects and dead organisms, being manifested by growth through metabolism, reproduction, and the power of adaptation to environment through changes originating internally.

Animate ... reproduction? Adaptation? Stick an animated character into a situation, they are effected by the outcome. A game of creating the perfect creature? Evolution? Might be too much like Spore...

    Thursday, February 25, 2010

    Method: Addition

    Addition
Expand.. what am I expanding? Adding? Enlarging... Is it the idea of using the 3D Printer? What is my goal? To model beautiful creatures and environments... I don't want to use Augmented Reality for everything. I do want... no NEED to have my SIP project be very interesting to me. The best way to do this is using a dragon somewhere in the process. Maybe a screen buddy? Design a dragon and print it then have sensors that can tell where a finger or hand is touching? Have it animated on the screen like a pet, walking or sleeping on the screen as I surf the web. Pet it, feed it... /shrug

    Monday, February 22, 2010

    Methods: Repetition, Combination, Addition

    Repetition
3D modeler 3D modeler Zbrush Zbrush sculpting sculpting painting life grass growing imitate life how things grow.
Create a base, garden, of some sort... Use "packets" made from printer ... use AR for a camera to register. Watch things grow on screen in real time or fast paced. Virtual Plant. Use tools made from modeler like maybe scissors or even REAL scissors to change the plant's world.

    Combination
Dragons, homes, furniture, living, wings, legs, arms, heads
Toy figure. Anonymous parts of figure have sound types attached to it. Putting different pieces together creates an interesting animal call, grunt, greeting. May have two pieces of info: Sound of ____ and a habit. Thus generating what this creature would do based on its pieces and where those pieces are located.

    Addition
    Model->Dragon->oriental->Japanese->language->program->stuffed animal->teaching software
Language buddy. A programmed stuffed animal that is actively aware of its surroundings. Will talk to the child, help teach it the names of things around it in the chosen language. Child can ask it questions about the language, it will respond. Aimed towards ages 3-10. Basic language skills.

    Evolve

There is so little time. Time does not exist. It is a created counter that humans depend on. Without humans there would be no time, no calculation as to when winter will come or when the flowers will bloom. Without humans there would be so much colorful life. But isn't a human life the same? When you minus all their possessions, their jobs, their work, their cost, their everything... Each and every peice becomes life. In the true world there is only the living and the earth.

Interactive world. View popular videos, culture sites... learn how much of our planet is withering away.

An innovative project that awakens others to the current situation.

A morning widget displaying a random country or county or city or town or person... letting you know who they are, what they are, how they are like, what they like, what they dislike.. A way to evolve global awareness of fellow Earthians.

    Why?

There are moments when you wonder simply, "Why?" Why am I taking so much effort? Spending so much when I have so less. Do I need what I want?

Enter Strain of Thought stage right:
Looking outside my window I see darkness where there could be light. Where hopes and dreams would filter through this hypocrisy. What if I created a world where images and minds filter through... no they ARE filtered?
If pies are cut into eight even slices and there are only seven people in the gathering, who gets the last piece? Do most assume that the fattest of them all swipes the piece when gorging down his own? Or do they realize that he is on a diet and that eating his first piece is truly eating him away from the inside. Dissolving his resolve. Destroying his ego, his self-esteem. Could he survive the ongoing stares? Would he escape? What if life could tell a story in another light. By revealing the darkness overshadowed by light. What if. What if what if what if what if... so many questions so little answers in our world. They say the best questions are answered with more questions... or is that true? no the best but the most worth while questions that really turn the tides of any civilization.

    The Beginning

As with all things there is no beginning or end. Only a continous yet never ending cycle of creation and destruction. Which of course I contridict my own title of my post. But nevermind that.. please, join me in the exploration of my mind into the depths of innovation.

    What is innovation?

A word we must define in class. A moment or period of time in which our hearts are filled with joy of creating something from the only knowledges we own.

What new and exciting world can I share with my fellows? Using the 3D printer I may manipulate both time and space with augmented reality. Creatures set before a set come to life the world behind them. An animator's job is to... well animate. to bring life to something that may otherwise be lifeless.

Certainly with my future in animation, I wish to bring joy and wonder to children and adults-alike. I wish to return adults to when they were younger, when their imaginations took them places they never thought of before.

How many people wish to live on Pandora... so many I'm sure. I certainly wish to strip myself from this highly technical and stale environment and fly on top of a "banshee".

Let's see where we can fly.
